Algebra & Sequences
Algebra and sequences are all about patterns, rules, and using symbols to represent unknown values. They help us solve problems where we don't yet know every number.
🔍 Algebra uses letters (like x or y) to stand for unknown numbers. We can write equations and solve them to find the value.
Examples:
- x + 5 = 12 → x = 7
- 3y = 15 → y = 5
🧩 Algebra is also useful for creating and describing patterns and sequences.
📈 Sequences are lists of numbers that follow a rule or pattern. Each number in the list is called a term.
Examples:
- 2, 4, 6, 8, 10... (Rule: add 2 each time)
- 5, 10, 20, 40... (Rule: multiply by 2 each time)
📊 We can describe a sequence using a formula. For example, the sequence 3, 6, 9, 12... can be written as:
Term = 3n
(where n is the position of the term)
✅ Mastering algebra and sequences helps you solve puzzles, find missing terms, and understand patterns — all key skills for 11+ maths.
