Time & Timetables
Time and timetables are about understanding clocks, durations, and schedules. These skills are essential for managing your day and solving multi-step 11+ maths problems.
⏰ Reading Time
- • Analogue: Uses hour and minute hands. Remember that the "short" hand is the hour.
- • Digital (24hr): Used in timetables. Subtract 12 from hours 13-23 to find the PM time (e.g., 14:35 = 2:35 PM).
📅 Timetables
To read a schedule, find the location in the rows and the departure/arrival times in the columns. Always read from left to right for journey progress.
⏱️ Calculating Durations
Working out how long something takes is easiest using the "Jump Method":
• Jump from 09:45 to 10:00 (15 mins)
• Jump from 10:00 to 12:00 (2 hours)
• Jump from 12:00 to 12:20 (20 mins)
Total Duration: 2 hours 35 minutes
- Remember there are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100!
- When subtracting time, if the minutes are smaller on top, borrow 60 minutes from the hour column.
✅ Mastering time and timetables helps you solve complex duration problems and manage your schedule efficiently.
