Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
Fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways to show parts of a whole. They are closely linked, and being able to move between them is an important skill in maths.
🔢 Fractions show how many parts we have out of a total number of equal parts.
Example: 1/2 means 1 part out of 2 equal parts.
🪙 Decimals are another way of writing fractions, especially those with 10, 100, or 1000 as the denominator.
Example: 1/2 = 0.5, 3/4 = 0.75
📊 Percentages show parts out of 100. The word "percent" means "per 100".
Example: 50% means 50 out of 100, which is the same as 1/2 or 0.5.
🔄 They are all connected:
- 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%
- 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%
- 3/5 = 0.6 = 60%
✅ Understanding how to convert between fractions, decimals and percentages will help you solve many types of questions quickly and confidently.
