11+ English Comprehension
Comprehension is the part of the 11+ English paper where your child reads a passage — a piece of fiction, a poem or a non-fiction extract — and then answers questions about it. It is testing far more than reading speed: it asks whether your child can find information, read between the lines, work out what an unfamiliar word means from its context, and explain why a writer chose a particular phrase.
Questions usually fall into four groups:
- Retrieval — the answer is written in the passage and just needs finding.
- Inference — the answer is implied, so your child must use clues plus their own reasoning ("how do we know the character was nervous?").
- Vocabulary — what a word or phrase means as it is used here.
- Language and structure — why the writer used a simile, a short sentence or a particular word, and what effect it has on the reader.

How to get the most from a comprehension paper
- Read the passage once, properly. One careful read beats three rushed ones. Encourage your child to picture what is happening rather than skim for keywords.
- Check the marks. A one-mark question wants one idea; a three-mark question wants three. The mark allocation tells your child how much to write.
- Point to the evidence. For inference questions, the answer should always be traceable to specific words in the passage — get into the habit of underlining them.
- Never leave a blank. A sensible attempt built from the passage often picks up a mark; an empty line never does.
- Mark it together. The conversation about the questions that were wrong or guessed is where the improvement actually happens.

How long should an 11+ comprehension paper take?
Allow roughly 20 to 25 minutes: about five minutes reading the passage carefully and the rest answering the questions. Timing the paper from the start helps your child learn not to over-read the passage.
What kinds of questions appear in 11+ comprehension?
Expect a mix of retrieval questions (find the fact), inference questions (what does this tell us), vocabulary questions (what does this word mean here) and language questions about why the writer chose a particular word or image.
