11+ Speed, Distance, Time Online Tests

Speed, distance and time are linked by one relationship: speed equals distance divided by time. Rearranged, distance equals speed multiplied by time, and time equals distance divided by speed. Almost every question in this topic is an application of one of those three forms.

The 11+ presents these as word problems about journeys, and the difficulty is usually in the units rather than the formula. A speed in kilometres per hour with a time given in minutes needs converting before the formula can be applied at all.

Questions parents ask about Speed, Distance, Time

Is speed, distance and time on every 11+ paper?

Not every one, but it appears often enough - especially in grammar school papers - to be worth learning properly. It also overlaps with ratio and measurement.

What is the most common mistake?

Leaving the time in minutes when the speed is per hour. Converting 45 minutes to 0.75 hours before starting fixes most errors in this topic.

How do you find average speed over two stages?

Add the distances, add the times, then divide total distance by total time. Averaging the two speeds gives the wrong answer unless the times happen to be equal.
