11+ Place Value Online Tests
Place value is the idea that a digit is worth different amounts depending on where it sits in a number. The 4 in write 40 is worth four tens; the same 4 in 400 is worth four hundreds. Almost every other topic in the 11+ maths paper rests on this, which is why it is worth being quick and certain with it rather than merely able to work it out.
In the 11+ this topic shows up as reading and writing large numbers in words and figures, putting a set of numbers in order, and multiplying or dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. Examiners like decimal place value too, because it catches children who have learned a rule without understanding it: knowing that 0.7 is larger than 0.07 is a place value question, not a decimals question.

Place Value: tips that earn marks
- When you multiply by 10 the digits move one place to the left; the decimal point never moves. Thinking of it the other way round is the single most common slip.
- Write large numbers in groups of three from the right before you read them, so 4051206 becomes 4,051,206.
- To compare decimals, give them the same number of decimal places first: 0.7 becomes 0.70, which is plainly bigger than 0.07.
Questions parents ask about Place Value
How important is place value in the 11+ maths exam?
It rarely appears as a whole question on its own, but it underpins rounding, decimals, money, measures and column arithmetic. A child who is shaky on place value tends to lose marks scattered right across the paper rather than in one place.
What is the hardest place value question in the 11+?
Usually dividing a decimal by 100, or naming the value of a digit in a seven-digit number. Both reward careful reading rather than speed.
How long should these online place value tests take?
Each paper is short and timed, so most children finish in around fifteen minutes. Sitting one paper a day for a week is far more effective than sitting five in one afternoon.
