11+ Negative Numbers & Integers Online Tests
Negative numbers are numbers below zero. The 11+ introduces them through familiar contexts - temperature, bank balances, floors below ground level - and then tests whether a child can order them and calculate across zero.
The most common exam question asks for the difference between two temperatures where one is negative. Children who picture a number line get these right; children who try to subtract the digits without thinking about direction usually do not.

What these Negative Numbers & Integers tests cover
- Ordering and comparing negative numbers
- Placing negative numbers on a number line
- Adding and subtracting across zero
- Finding the difference between two negative values
- Temperature, altitude and balance problems
- Negative numbers in simple sequences
Negative Numbers & Integers: tips that earn marks
- Draw a number line. Counting the steps from -4 up to 3 gives 7 far more reliably than trying to do it mentally.
- Remember that -9 is smaller than -2, even though 9 is bigger than 2. Further left means smaller, always.
- Subtracting a negative is the same as adding: 5 - (-3) is 8. This is the rule most often forgotten under time pressure.
Questions parents ask about Negative Numbers & Integers
At what age do children meet negative numbers?
Usually in Year 4 or 5 through temperature, with calculation across zero coming in Year 6 - which is exactly when 11+ preparation begins.
Are negative numbers multiplied in the 11+?
Rarely. Ordering, and adding and subtracting across zero, cover almost everything the exam asks for.
What is the most common mistake?
Counting the difference between -3 and 4 as 1 instead of 7, by subtracting rather than counting the steps along the line.
