Measurement questions test whether a child can move confidently between units - millimetres to metres, grams to kilograms, millilitres to litres - and then use those values in a calculation. The conversion is rarely the whole question; it is usually the first step of a longer problem.
The metric system is built on tens, hundreds and thousands, so this topic leans directly on place value. Most lost marks here come not from the arithmetic but from answering in the wrong unit, or from converting in the wrong direction.

- Learn the four key conversions: 10 mm in a cm, 100 cm in a m, 1,000 m in a km, 1,000 g in a kg.
- Ask whether your answer should be a bigger or smaller number before you convert. Going to a smaller unit always gives a bigger number.
- Convert everything to the same unit before comparing or adding. Adding 250 g to 1.2 kg without converting is the classic error.
- Always write the unit in your answer. Some mark schemes will not award the mark without it.
Questions parents ask about Measurement: Units & Conversion
Are imperial units tested in the 11+?
Only lightly, usually as an approximate conversion such as 5 miles being about 8 kilometres. Metric is the focus throughout.
Why do children lose marks on measurement questions?
Overwhelmingly because of unit errors rather than arithmetic - converting the wrong way, or giving the answer in grams when kilograms were asked for.
Does this topic overlap with area and volume?
Yes. Area questions often supply one side in centimetres and another in metres precisely to check that the child converts first.
