11+ Data Handling & Probability Online Tests

Data handling is about reading information from charts, tables and graphs, and summarising it with averages. Probability is about how likely something is, written as a fraction. Both reward careful reading at least as much as calculation.

The 11+ favours bar charts, line graphs, pie charts and two-way tables, usually with a question that requires combining two pieces of information rather than reading off a single value. Mean, median, mode and range appear regularly, and children need to keep the four straight.

Data Handling & Probability: tips that earn marks

Questions parents ask about Data Handling & Probability

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the total divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value once they are in order. The mode is the one that appears most often. The range is not an average at all - it is the spread.

Are pie charts tested in the 11+?

Yes, usually by reading proportions rather than measuring angles - for example recognising that a quarter of the circle represents a quarter of the total.

How is probability written in the 11+?

Almost always as a fraction, occasionally as a decimal or percentage. Answers such as 'likely' are only accepted when the question specifically asks in words.
